The Becomes the King of Ascot....

Everything I needed to say I said yesterday, other than what a top class jockey Jonny Murtagh is. Absolutely brilliant. What a horse the Duke is, only the really good ones come back when being headed! I also cant help thinking that the definition of ‘synergy’ is evident when you look at Aiden O’Brien and Jonny Murtagh. They seem to produce a sum greater than 100% working together!

RacingDiary.co.uk tipped Duke of Marmalade to win The King George 2008
Duke of Marmalade beats Papal Bull in thrilling finish

I had a huge bet on The Duke and needed oxygen after the race, but what a race and what a top class horse he is!

Will Duke Stay the Trip?

There is doubt in the media today about whether Duke of Marmalade will stay the King George trip. Let me tell you where I stand, I in fact have absolutely no idea, whether he will or wont, which differs from most of the media pundits, who seem to know.

I look at it like this, he is trained by Aiden O’Brien, He has lifted 13 Group One trophies this season, He saddles Duke of Marmalade who is unbeaten this year and is a huge stallion prospect, he has a wealth of talent in his stable and for me is clearly the BEST TRAINER OF HIS GENERATION. So do I accept that he just may know what he is doing and dare to suggest that if he did not think he would get trip then he would not be here? Of course, I don’t think I know better than Aiden O’Brien. Given that then I am happy to be with Duke of Marmalade and by following his judgement has made me and readers of this page a lot of money this season!

DUKE OF MARMALADE is my NAP, in the table I am second, and will now try to close on the leader who is doing very very well!

DUKE IS NAP TO WIN KING GEORGE
What a busy 10 days! I have been progressing my goal of training racehorses. I completed one of the week long courses at the Northern Racing College last week and have had a few days away. I am back now and I hope to be training within 3 months, but for now we continue to punt!

So this weekend is the KING GEORGE and it is DUKE OF MARMALADE that is the one to focus on. It clearly is a match between The Duke and Youmzain. Youmzain won a Group One last time out and you may recall he was the horse narrowly beaten in the Arc last season by Dylan Thomas, after that long Stewards. Aiden O’Brien the Group One master saddles his star horse of this season, Jonny Murtagh rides The Duke and he will be joined by stablemates Macarthur and Red Rock Canyon. There has been some strong support for Lurcarno, but if Duke of Marmalade stays the trip then he should win. That is the only real worry, the trip, even Aiden O’Brien says he can not be sure whether he will stay. If he doesn’t then surely Youmzain will be the one to profit.

NAPS TABLE UPDATE
I have NAP’ed Duke of Marmalade on Saturday. I am now second in the NAPS table, but this is still 10 points behind the leader. The competition runs until November so I hope that I can close on the lead. CLICK HERE to see the full table.

Busy Week Ahead...

I am on a course all week, so I may struggle to update the site this week. Luckily Monday is a quiet day !

John Smith's Cup 12/1 JOB DONE

GROUND condititions were heavy yesterday at York, which meant the mudlarks came to the fore and spot on we were with Flying Clarets. Job Done! 20-1 early won at 12-1.

NAPS TABLE - now 4th
I have moved up to 4th in the NAPS table. FUll steam ahead for this! I have nap'ed Harry Flashman today (2-40 Perth). Its a gamble that he jumps well, if so with teh weight he should topple the short price favourite.

Winker is Back
Great to see Winker Watson back today. He runs in the Group One at 1-45 in France, I think Ravens Pass will prevail here but hope Winker runs well!

Aiden Goes for Another Group One
Another Group One, another Ballydoyle winner, Moonstone has the best chance for the O'Brien team at The Curragh this afternoon in the Irish Oaks.

Heavy Going for John Smith's Cup

GROUND conditions deteriorated to heavy at York on Friday afternoon after 8mm of rain, and further showers for the area were forecast by the Met Office overnight and during Saturday morning.

Clerk of the course William Derby was confident that Saturday's meeting, which features the £150,000 John Smith's Cup, would go ahead without a problem, and no inspection was planned.

He said on Friday evening: “We had more rain today than anticipated, but hopefully the worst of it is over and we'll get no more than the odd shower from now on.”

A Met Office spokesman said: “York had 8mm of rain but that system has moved away and replaced by showers. Generally they'll be light, but there could be the odd moderate one before racing, and I doubt there will be a chance for ground conditions to improve much.”

So Who Will Win?

Well with the terrible ground I am going for Flying Clarets- small stakes. Richard Fahey has a great record at York and this horse loves the ground. So thats my pick!

The Feature of the Week...The July Cup

Where do we start? This is a good race to say the least. I suspect that if you ran it five times you would get five different results! Lets start with the racecard.

15 runners go to post. Those inform include Kingsgate Naitive and Utmost Respect who chalked up significant victories last time. Ben Baun and Prime Defender are class acts and US Ranger has the class to pop up and win.

Kingsgate Naitive has the higest rating at 120 and won in the style of a top class sprinter at Ascot. Getting 7 pounds weight for age, and Seb Sanders aboard then this is the starting point. John Best is in good form and the only concern is the ground, as he has won with less give, but this may just be circumstance. Ithink Kingsgate Native is a TOP CLASS sprinter and the weight allowance may be too much for the rest to cope with.

I would not be going too heavy but I do like Kingsgate Native and at 5/1 this looks value.

Marchand d'or will go on the ground and has the speed, but for me all things point to John Best's Colt who won the Nunthorpe as a two year old.

Going Now Soft At HQ...

The weather caused a few problems at Newmarket and Darjina didn't run. Today we have no Group One but we have two excellent Group Two races.

Newmarket 14:00
Tnt July Stakes (group 2)
No. Form Horse Age Wt Trainer Jockey
1 (5) silks 411 Classic Blade (IRE) 11 2 8-12 Tom Dascombe R Kingscote
2 (7) silks 124 Effort 23 2 8-12 M Johnston K McEvoy
3 (2) silks 237 I Am The Best 23 2 8-12 D M Simcock R Ffrench
4 (3) silks 1 Prime Delivery (USA) 9 2 8-12 R M H Cowell T E Durcan
5 (4) silks 123 Prolific (IRE) 21 2 8-12 R Hannon R L Moore
6 (1) silks 2 Sayif (IRE) 52 2 8-12 P W Chapple-Hyam A Munro
7 (6) silks 221 Viva Ronaldo (IRE) 27 2 8-12 R A Fahey L Dettori

Prolific has the best form, third in the Norfolk Stakes and will take a world of beating. Ryan Moore is ahead in the jockeys title race and Richard Hannon's two year olds are in sensational form. Tom Dascombes colt has done well, but yet to race at this leval. Prolific looks a solid option but may be a short price.

Newmarket 15:10
Princess Of Wales's Wbx.com Stakes (group 2)
No.   Form Horse Age Wt Trainer Jockey
1 (3) silks 2411-06 Lucarno (USA) 11 4 9-7 J H M Gosden J Fortune

11 (11) silks 4226-98 Shahin (USA) 19 5 9-2 b1 M P Tregoning R Hills

The soft ground will play right in to the hands of super filly Anna Pavlova. She ran a brilliant race last time to take the Group 2 Lancashire Oaks. The only concern is that therace comes too soon, but she has proven she is tough as old boots. Richard Fahey is flying this season and has proven that he can mix it with the big boys.

Forget Today..Get On for Wednesday...

The July meeting at Newmarket starts on Wednesday. We are going to have a great three days, and it starts with a couple of good races, Two tough Group races. First up is the Cherry Hinton.

Newmarket 2:35
Irish Thoroughbred Marketing Cherry Hinton Stakes (fill Gp2)
1 (4) silks 51 Ahla Wasahl 14 2 8-12 D M Simcock Ahmed Ajtebi
2 (7) silks 217 Art Princess (USA) 19 2 8-12 B W Hills M Hills

5 (6) silks 14 Lucky Leigh 21 2 8-12 M R Channon D Holland
6 (5) silks 21 Mrs Kipling (IRE) 11 2 8-12 S A Callaghan L Dettori
7 (1) silks 10 Please Sing 19 2 8-12 M R Channon E Creighton
8 (3) silks 51 Sea of Leaves (USA) 14 2 8-12 t J H M Gosden J Fortune

The first thing to say is that there is no outstanding performer in this line up and the market will be tight. My instinct is to let this race pas, but if there is the opportunity to lay the fav then I would at the right price as quite literally any of them could win.

However the Group One on the card is a much better proposition. I would say that this is one that will NOT be going the way of Aiden O'Brien, no prizes for that statement but it does give someone else a chance when he saddles no runner.

Darjina heads the betting and rightly so. The French Filly has very strong claims. Her season has consisted of three seconds, but the French filly has suffered a terrible journey having been held up at Calais for ten hours. If she does not run then Finsceal Beo will probably be favourite but after her last run where she did not run any sort of race I would want to take her on.

Newmarket 3:10
Uae Hydra Properties Falmouth Stakes (fillies' Group 1)
1 (4) silks 173-222 Darjina (FR) 22 4 9-5 A Royer Dupre De C Soumillon
2 (8) silks 65-5239 Finsceal Beo (IRE) 11 4 9-5 t1 J S Bolger K J Manning

7 (11) silks 2-11660 Seachange (NZ) 18 6 9-5 Graeme Sanders T E Durcan
8 (2) silks 3123-1 Briseida 38 3 8-10 P Schiergen Andrasch Starke

12 (9) silks 31-0576 Nahoodh (IRE) 19 3 8-10 M Johnston L Dettori

VERDICT
Darjina should Win if she arrives OK. Finsceal Beo is a LAY and if no Darjina I would back Infalible.

Its July Cup Week...

The July meeting at Newmarket is a great meeting, primarily becuase it provides great racing mid-week. I have been to the July meeting several times and it is one of my favourite meetings, right in the middle of summer at the home of racing.

Starting on Wednesday the feature race is the Group 1 Cherry Hinton Stakes, over 1m for fillies 3yo+. 14 runners are entered with declarations made by 10am Monday.

The feature on Thursday is the Group Two Princess of Wales stakes and Friday is a wonderful day with the Group One July Sprint Cup and the Group Two Superlative Stakes. We will get stuck in to these races as and when the declarations are made.

We are now on Facebook..
If you use Facebook then you can join the RacingDiary group. just search for racingdiary.

NAPS TABLE TARGET...
I will be working hard to climb the NAPS table this week. It is difficult as i have to provide the NAP 48 hours before the races so I am happy to be where I am, but I want to get to the top and will be burning the midnight oil to study the form. I have played it 'safe' for the next couple of days and will try to pull a couple of pearlers out of the hat for Newmarket.

Mount Nelson Wins Eclipse and we told you!

On Friday I wrote... In a race short of Group One performers I would go with the Ballydoyle team and Mount Nelson.

Smugness aside, (although it did my NAPS position no harm) isn't it amazing how many top class horses and Group One races Aiden O'Brien has. He has been dominant this season in a way I have never seen before.

1st 3 Mount Nelson 7-2
 2nd 5 Phoenix Tower (USA) 5-2 F
 3rd 6 Pipedreamer 4-1

Mount Nelson is obviously a second string at Ballydoyle, other stables he would be a star, and yet he won a Group One. What a brilliant trainer Aiden O'Brien is, and what a price. 7-2 Although 4-1 was widely available.

Murtagh has won so many Group One races this year he must be on cloud nine.

WHAT A RESULT and a race that was billed as a poor Group One provided a thrilling finish. It was close but confidence must have been the driver for Murtagh who out rode Durcan to win on the line.

The £10m Soverign Series...Good or Bad?

Good for Racing...the traditionalists will probably say NO...the revolutionists will say yes. Racing must move with the times and this can only be good for the game..

From Marketing Week Magazine
Racing UK, the racing broadcaster, is launching a new £10m season-long competition to crown the champion British racehorse. The Sovereign Series will begin in 2010, with extensive broadcast and commercial agreements planned.

The competition is intended to broaden the appeal of horse racing in the face of increasing competition from other sports. It aims to link a number of flat races into a competition and will run throughout the flat racing season to maintain intereste from viewers.

Racing UK has joined forces with Ascot to drive the initiative. The channel will be promoting and managing the collective broadcast and multimedia rights for the series.

The move will link ten prestigious races, among them, The Derby, King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes and The Stan James 2,000 Guineas. It also involves seven of the country's leading racecourses; Newmarket, Newbury, Epsom, Sandown, Goodwood, York and Ascot. The competition has received the backing of the British Horseracing Authority, as well as owners, trainers and jockeys.

The series will run for initial three years and an additional pot of £5m per annum has been added to the existing £5m prize money for the races with a £2m prize for the overall winner. A further £3m has been allocated to marketing, promoting and producing the series.

Racing UK chief executive Simon Bazalgette says he believes the Sovereign Series will capture the imagination of sports fans and create a new proposition for broadcasters and sponsors.

In addition to the Derby and the 2,000 Guineas at Newmarket, the series will comprise of the Emirates Airline Champion Stakes, the Juddmonte Lockinge Stakes, the Prince of Wales's Stakes, the Coral Eclipse, the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes, the Sussex Stakes, the Juddmonte International and the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes

The big Group One for the weekend has been declared. Nine go to post for the Sandown feature. The racecard is below.

Sandown 3:20 (RUK and CH 4)

2 (9) silks 350-223 Maraahel (IRE) 14 7 9-7 v Sir Michael Stoute R Hills
3 (1) silks 11/0-635 Mount Nelson 18 4 9-7 A P O'Brien J Murtagh

6 (4) silks 411-333 Pipedreamer 17 4 9-7 J H M Gosden J Fortune
7 (5) silks 255/3-29 Rob Roy (USA) 49 6 9-7 Sir Michael Stoute R L Moore

9 (3) silks 10-1131 Campanologist (USA) 15 3 8-10 Saeed bin Suroor L Dettori

Aiden O'Brien runs only one horse, no pacemakers, no covering his options, just one horse. Given the ammunition available to the Ballydoyle trainer then this is something we must take notice of.  That said Mount Nelson was used as a pacemaker last time out at Royal Ascot for Haradason and has not got much top class form. We must rely on the trainers view here who clearly thinks he is capable, and given O’Brien’s double figure haul of Group One’s to date then this is more than significant.

It does not look a great Group One. They are all ‘nearly’ horses for me, and if Mount Nelson can justify the faith of his trainer it could be his for the taking. Godolphin have a great record in this race and Campanologist ran a good race at Ascot, but that was not a Group One!

In a race short of Group One performers I would go with the Ballydoyle team and Mount Nelson.

Fingers Crossed for Danielle

DANIELLE McCREERY has been taken to hospital in Middlesbrough with suspected neck and back injuries after a fall before the opener at Redcar on Thursday evening.

McCreery was unshipped from the Ruth Carr-trained Only A Splash in front of the stalls as the pair made their way to post for the opening apprentice handicap.

The 6f contest was delayed by half an hour while course medical staff attended to the rider and an air ambulance arrived on the scene to take the rider to James Cook University Hospital.

"She was reported to be conscious and stable and the stewards are reviewing the incident," said Redcar's course chief executive Neil Etherington.

Here's to a super July! There is some great racing this month with the Coral Eclipse at Sandown on Saturday the first Group One for us to get stuck in to. Remember last year?

This is when Ryan Moore hit the headlines for his great ride on Notnowcato going it alone. Great race.

This year has been dominated by Aiden O'Brien andnd co taking just about all the Group One races. MOUNT NELSON is set to be Aidan O'Brien's only runner in the Coral-Eclipse Stakes at Sandown on Saturday, when the trainer will bid for his 12th Group 1 victory of the season. ELEVEN Group One Races in the bag so far is amazing! He may well do it again! I would not bet against it that is for sure! 7/2 looks a good price to me, given that the trainer could have run any number of horses here. CLICK HERE for latest Betting.

Fancy a Good Read?...Racing Books

For Father's Day I was given two racing books by my daughers.

Baxter vs The Bookies

Baxter Vs The Bookies’ a series of short stories with a twist which concentrate on the battle between punters and bookies, with plenty of racing content, too. The hero of the stories – or, anti-hero, depending on your point of view, is Baxter, who runs the SureFire Tipping Service which doesn’t always exactly live up to its name – which only adds to the entertainment value of the yarns. For those who like racing and betting and a few laughs I recommend this to you.

The more I read the books the more I smiled, particularly as I can identify with someone who runs a tipping service for a living! Hopefully we are not too much like Baxter!

For people who like a good laugh then it is well worth a good read.

Obviously Roy Granville knows the game, he should he is a former bookie, even A P McCoy said "Good stuff, I really enjoyed reading it".- high praise indeed!
