Formula One’s governing body the FIA is to take legal action against eight teams who plan to break away to form their own championship.

F1 Teams to go to court....

Latest from Sky News: Ferrari, McLaren, Brawn GP, Renault, Toyota, BMW Sauber, Red Bull Racing and Toro Rosso have all declined to enter F1 for 2010 ahead of the British Grand Prix at Silverstone.

The FIA has warned of a ‘financial arms race’ within the sport over the split. The development comes after the Formula One Teams’ Association (FOTA), failed to reach a compromise with FIA president Max Mosley over plans for a £40m budget cap. The FIA said:

“The actions of FOTA as a whole, and Ferrari in particular, amount to serious violations of law including wilful interference with contractual relations, direct breaches of Ferrari’s legal obligations and a grave violation of competition law.”

Earlier, the governing body said:

“We are disappointed but not surprised by FOTA’s inability to reach a compromise in the best interests of the sport. It is clear that elements within FOTA have sought this outcome throughout the prolonged period of negotiation and have not engaged in the discussions in good faith. The FIA cannot permit a financial arms race in the championship nor can the FIA allow FOTA to dictate the rules of Formula One.”

The FIA had issued a deadline of Friday for teams to enter next year’s championship unconditionally.

The 2010 competition now consists of Williams and Force India, along with the three new outfits – USF1, Campos and Manor. The split was announced ahead of the British Grand Prix, which takes place at Silverstone on Sunday.

FOTA said it had tried to work with the FIA and Bernie Ecclestone, who holds the commercial rights to F1, to “develop and improve the sport” since forming last September. But it added in a statement: “It has become clear, however, the teams cannot continue to compromise on the fundamental values of the sport and have declined to alter their original conditional entries to the 2010 world championship.

“These teams, therefore, have no alternative other than to commence the preparation for a new championship which reflects the values of its participants and partners.”

British Grand Prix 22nd June 2009- Silverstone- Live on BBC 1

Can Jenson Button win the British Grand prix? He has won 6 out of 7 so far this season for his Brawn GP team and is 4/6 favourite to do so again at Silverstone on Sunday.

Will Button win at Silverstone?

The early odds are (from Bet365)

Jenson Button 4/6

Sebastian Vettel 2/1

Felipe Massa 28/1

Rubens Ba’ello 7/1

Kimi Raikkonen 25/1

Mark Webber 17/2

Fernando Alonso 66/1

Lewis Hamilton 33/1

Jarno Trulli 28/1 25/1

Timo Glock 50/1 33/1

Nico Rosberg 50/1

Robert Kubica 66/1

Bar 200/1+

A shadow will be cast over the race as FOTA have announced that they are pulling out of Formula One to set up their own rival championships. It is a shame because this is a big race for the UK and for Brawn GP as well as world championship leader Jenson Button.
There is no value in backing Button at this stage, but we think Jenson Button will win and we support the British Driver to win the British Grand Prix at Silverstone.

Formula 1 has been thrown into chaos after eight of its major teams said they are now planning to set up a rival championship for the 2010 season.

From BBC : The threat by members of the F1 Teams Association (Fota) escalates their row with world motorsport boss Max Mosley over his budget cap proposals. The statement reads;

The teams have declined to alter their original conditional entries to the 2010 F1 Championship, We’ve no alternative than to commence preparation for a new championship.”

Mosley was insistent on introducing a voluntary £40m budget cap for teams to curtail a “financial arms race” in F1. But Fota refused to agree to his conditions, prompting championship leader Brawn GP, Ferrari, McLaren, Renault, Toyota, BMW Sauber, Red Bull Racing and Toro Rosso to take their drastic action.They announced their decision following a four-hour meeting on Thursday night ahead of this weekend’s British Grand Prix at Silverstone. Fota statement;

“Since the formation of Fota last September the teams have worked together and sought to engage the FIA and commercial rights holder (Bernie Ecclestone), to develop and improve the sport. Unprecedented worldwide financial turmoil has inevitably placed great challenges before the F1 community.Fota is proud that it has achieved the most substantial measures to reduce costs in the history of our sport. In particular, the manufacturer teams have provided assistance to the independent teams, a number of which would probably not be in the sport today without the Fota initiatives. The Fota teams have further agreed upon a substantial voluntary cost reduction that provides a sustainable model for the future.Following these efforts, all the teams have confirmed to the FIA and the commercial rights holder that they are willing to commit until the end of 2012.The FIA and the commercial rights holder have campaigned to divide Fota.

The wishes of the majority of the teams are ignored. Furthermore, tens of millions of dollars have been withheld from many teams by the commercial rights holder, going back as far as 2006.”Despite this, and the uncompromising environment, Fota has genuinely sought compromise.”It has become clear, however, the teams cannot continue to compromise on the fundamental values of the sport and have declined to alter their original conditional entries to the 2010 world championship.”

Fota added that its championship would put F1 fans first and boast the best drivers and sponsors.

“This series will have transparent governance, one set of regulations, encourage more entrants and listen to the wishes of the fans, including offering lower prices for spectators worldwide, partners and other important stakeholders, The major drivers, stars, brands, sponsors, promoters and companies historically associated with the highest level of motorsport will all feature in this new series. Former champions Williams and Force India have already committed unconditionally to the FIA’s world championship along with three new entrants – Campos, US F1 and Manor. The FIA has said there are other would-be newcomers waiting to take the places of those teams that refused to enter unconditionally, although one, Lola, has already withdrawn its application. The stage is also set for a legal battle, with the FIA saying champions Ferrari and the two Red Bull teams have existing contracts which commit them to the existing championship. The FIA had set a Friday deadline for five teams – Brawn, BMW-Sauber, McLaren, Renault and Toyota – to convert their provisional entries into unconditional ones or risk being excluded.

There was no immediate comment from the FIA or Ecclestone.

Speaking at Silverstone ahead of Friday practice, BBC TV’s F1 commentator Jonathan Legard said:

“The FIA will say this is a power play, it’s brinkmanship, and if they [the teams] want to do their own series then so be it. But things are not looking good.”

Back No Safety Car on Betfair at 1.72

Back Button to be first lap leader at 3.95

Are Jenson Button and Ross Brawn plotting another superior race startegy to scupper all-comers in the Turkish Grand Priix?

A thrilling final qualification session saw Sebastian Vettel pip Jenson Button for pole position in the Turkish Grand Prix and since the Turkish Grand Prix has only ever been won from pole position, Sebastian Vettel must be enormously pleased with that pole position.

Watch the Turkish Grand Prix LIVE online with the BBC- Click HERE

However, when car weights are taken into account, Button would still appear to have the fastest car in the Brawn and will not pit for the first time until lap 17 compared to Vettel’s estimated first pit stop at lap 15 and I am still feeling reasonably comfortable with the bet I took before practice for Jenson Button to win the Turkish Grand Prix, since when car weights are taken into account, Button was probably a couple a of tenths faster than Vettel and a poor first sector damaged Buttons pole position challenge on his last qualification lap.

Behind Button and Vettel on the grid, come Barrichello in the other Brawn and Webber in the other Red Bull, followed by Trulli in a Toyota, the two Ferraris (Raikonnen and Massa) and then Alonso in the first Renault. Lewis Hamilton’s desperate season continued when he failed to progress beyond the first qualification session and will start from 16th on the grid in his McLaren-Mercedes.

I am taking Jenson Button to buck the trend of pole position winners in the Turkish Grand Prix and that means reliance on superior race strategy from the Brawn team (something we have seen time and again this season). Jenson Button is currently available at 2.46 on Betfair, whilst Vettel is available at 2.7. so it seems that the market agrees with my analysis. I am pleased to have taken slightly better odds on Button (2.6) before first practice on Friday because the “corrected for weight” grid shows that Button has a clear advantage on a clear track and should take advantage of his extra starting fuel and go on and win the Turkish Grand Prix. Ross Brawn has said “We’re on lap 17 – if Vettel and Webber are longer than that they have a strategic advantage, if not we do.” I dont think Ross Brawn can make things any clearer than that and you can be sure that Mr Brawn KNOWS EXACTLY which laps the Red Bull cars will pit.

Fine weather and a modern track with good run off areas make a safety car an unlikely event in the Turkish Grand Prix, especially with soaring temperatures and zero chance of rain. No Safety Car can be backed on Betfair at around 1.72 which is a little skinny, but should see you almost double your investment.
Here is a good insight into the Turkish Grand Prix, from Youtube..

We have previously made good money from backing the pole sitter to be first lap leader, but the markets have spotted this one and Vettel is only available at 1.44 on Betfair. 1.44 is far too skinny since we have already seen a change of leader on the first lap this season and I am hoping for a repeat performance to buck the trend in the Turkish Grand Prix along with the pole sitter not being the winner of the race. My reasoning is that Button was just one tenth of a second behind Vettel and that included being two tenths down on the first sector, so even with the extra weight of extra fuel on board, Button could well be faster than Vettel anyway. The Turkish track is difficult for overtaking until the the small turn 11 between the two long straights and if Button has better straight line speed and we know he can be brave on the brakes and smooth in the turns, then Button can take Vettel here, even if Vettel is able to get to the first corner ahead of the Brawn driver. At 3.95 on Betfair, I think this worth a small investment and I will certainly be taking an interest in Button in this market.

In Summary

Back Button to win at 2.46 on Betfair

Back No Safety Car on Betfair at 1.72

Back Button to be first lap leader at 3.95 (small investment only)

TheF1 Road Show Stops in Turkey…

Jenson Button and co will be back on a track after the streets on Monte Carlo. The Turkish Grand Prix is the newest and should provide a good race. Here is the Formula One Insight from Youtube for the Turkish Grand Prix.

The track in Istanbul is anti-clockwise with a mix of low and high speed corners with overtaking being difficult on the majority of the track. A thrilling race is in store once again. Tactics will be important and Brawn have cornered the market in that department.

Jenson Button and Brawn F1 have won 5 from 6 Grand Prix and he has also started on pole 5 times. Is button beatable? Certainly you can not bet against him and is evens to win the race at this early stage. If he dominates practice he will be odds on again, so Back Jenson Button Now to win the Turkish Grand Prix…

Will Massa take to the podium in the Spanish Grand Prix 10th May, 2009, and live on BBC1

Betting on the Spanish Grand Prix is brisk and the start of the race could be the most interesting Grand Prix start this season. With Jenson Button on pole you might expect him to be leading into the first corner and subsequently go on to be leading at the end of the first lap since overtaking is so difficult at Barcelona’s Circuit de Catalunya. But thats without reckoning on either car weights or Kers and for the second time this season, we may see the pole position car overtaken to the first corner and still behind at the end of the first lap. Whilst Jenson Button is 1.4 on Betfair to be leading at the end of the first lap, it would be very tempting to back either Massa in a Ferrari (with Kers) at 4-1 or Vettel at 5-1 to beat him to the first corner and be leading after lap one and despite Massa’s Kers advantage, my own preference is for Vettel at 6.6 @ Betfair, since Massa would have to leap frog both the Brawn car and the Red Bull car.

Following qualification the first two cars, driven by Button (Brawn) and Vettel (Red Bull) reduced dramatically in price to be the eventual winners of the race, with Button available at 4-6 at William Hill and Vettel available at 10-3 and despite Massa being available at 9-1 and Barrichello at 8-1, we think the eventual winner will come from the the front two on the grid.

My own preference is for Vettel, the new innovation of publishing the weights of the cars introduced this season tells us that Vettel will go 17 laps before pitting for the first time, whilst Button will pit after 14 laps, Barrichello after 15 laps and Massa after 16 laps so Vettel pits last of the leading four drivers and if this puts him back out at the head of the race (assuming that he gets to the first corner first!) then it will be difficult for the other drivers to pass him.

It is ineteresting that Button thinks the Ferrari is fast, he said “Ferrari are closing very, very quickly” and “they’re one to watch over the next few races, for sure” and we take Massa for the third place on the podium at 5/4 with William Hill for his first points of the season.

Betting Tips Summary

Take Vettel to lead after the first lap at 6.6 on Betfair.

Take Vettel to win the race at 10-3 with William Hill

Take Massa for a podium finish at 5-4 with William Hill

Today is Qualification for the Spanish Grand Prix (Barcelona) with tomorrow’s race and today’s qualification shown live on BBC1. Jenson Button has won 3 of the first four Grand Prix of this season and looks well positioned to improve his points tally tomorrow. The dramatic start to the season has seen McLaren and Ferrari drop down the pecking order in favour of new boys Brawn. Red Bull seem to go from strength to strength, and the exciting Toyota team continue to improve. There is nothing to suggest that the new order of things will be changed after yesterday’s practice sessions. However, new developments introduced in Spain are likely to define the order for much of the rest of the season and these same new developments make us defer our betting choices until after the Qualification session today.

It is notable that in first practice, Barrichello ran with the old car, whilst Button was first in the early practice running a car with a modified front wing, new aerodynamics and alterations to the double-decker diffuser. In the second session Barrichello was fourth with the modifications whilst Button was sixth with further alterations to the front wing. We can be certain that Brawn are on the pace for this race and we can expect a very strong Qualification session.

Red Bull have come closest to challenging Brawn this season and I expect that trend to continue in Barcelona. Red Bull are satisfied with the modifications they have made but still have not introduced the controversial double-decker diffuser and we can expect Red Bull to improve their pace when this modification takes place. The Red Bull team are unsurprisingly “bullish” about their chances and look the best choice to challenge Brawn yet again. It would be nice to see the popular Aussie Mark Webber do well in Barcelona, but Vettel seems to have the edge in races and we expect the aforementioned drivers to occupy the first four places on the grid after qualification. If one of the Red Bull drivers can get on the front row alongside a Brawn car then we could have a very exciting start to the race indeed!

Toyota do not expect to be as competitive as they were in Bahrain, where Jarno Trulli finished third, but are expecting a leap in performance for the next race in Monaco when they say there are more car upgrades to come.

Ferrari expect better things now that racing is back in Europe and Alonso will perform well in the Spanish GP on his home soil, but it is BMW Sauber and Wiliams-Toyotas that may produce some surprises in both the qualification sessions and the race itself.

We are not placing any significant bets other than the first four for the grid because it will be interesting to see just how close the Red Bulls are to the Brawn cars during qualification and what differences all of the car modifications make before making any race predictions.

Remember to come back to Racing Diary later today for the betting tips that you need for the Spanish Grand Prix.

McLaren have today been handed a suspended three-race ban ….

as the ‘lie-gate’ saga hearing was held.

The team’s pro-active approach in the run up to the extraordinary hearing in-fact softened the blow as McLaren could have been more heavily penalised. Last year they were fined $100m for a similar incident.

However, the WMSC appear to have taken into account a number of mitigating circumstances and McLaren pleaded guilty on all five counts that was of breaching the International Sporting Code.

This means that the ban is suspended for 12 months so they and Lewis Hamilton CAN RACE ON this season.

Ross Brawn has Comforting Words for Button Backers…

Well, he hasn’t commented directly on the article I published yesterday, but Ross Brawn has been talking to the press after his team and Jenson Button Won in Bahrain.

Team owner, Ross Brawn has revolutionised theRacing Diary have tipped Jenson Button to be Formula former Honda Team. Brawn said: “I have no doubts about Jenson’s driving ability and will to win. It’s up to us to produce the best possible performance in our car, do the pit stops, get the right strategies, and make sure the car is ultra reliable.

The Brawn cars have been a model of reliability, with both cars finishing the first four races of the season in the points, and with very few problems. Brawn, though, says” our car is now tired and getting a bit stale. We are in need of the fresh developments that will come in Spain. There are quite a lot of new bits.

This is news that must dismay Brawn’s rivals, but not punters who have backed Jenson Button to Win the World F1 Title. We can take further comfort from Brawns words;

“We have had no upgrades for the first four races of the year because there was nothing there to add. Getting to the first race was all we could do, there has been nothing in the cupboard until now.”

If You Back Brawn Now you could do it with a FREE BET. If you Back Button on Betfair you will be able to trade an early profit and get a £25 Free Bet Now.
