JAMIE CARRAGHER told the Liverpool Echo that he is confident Fernando Torres will remain at Anfield to help the club regain their place in the Champions League. The Spaniard’s future has been the subject of intense speculation with both Chelsea and Manchester City linked with the prolific striker.
Reds managing director Christian Purslow is working hard to persuade Torres to stay put and Liverpool have always insisted he is not for sale any price. However the bookmakers think differently. Paddy Power, who interestingly suspended the betting on Joe Cole signing for Liverpool before anyone else have now suspended betting on Fernando Torres quitting Anfield.
There has been a huge move in the markets with Torres being quoted at all prices. Racing Diary has also heard from a good source that Torres wishes to leave Liverpool, but it now depends if Chelsea or Manchester City can come up with the cash. Chelsea may struggle under financial fair play rules.
However William Hill take a different view. With a number of clubs itching to get their hands on Fernando Torres’s signiture, Hills have opened a book on which club he will represent on the first day of the season and perhaps surprisingly he is 1/2 to still be a Liverpool player. Moneybags Man City are 7/2 and Chelsea 8/1.
“There are very few teams who can afford Torres price tag, as a result we feel that he will remain a Liverpool player,” said Hill’s spokesman Joe Crilly.
Fernando Torres‘ Club On First Day Of 2010/11 Season: 1/2 Liverpool, 7/2 Man City, 5/1 Chelsea, 8/1 Barcelona, 12/1 Inter, 16/1 Real Madrid…..Others On Request….Loan Deals Count
Manchester City boss Roberto Mancini is not actively pursuing Liverpool striker Fernando Torres, according to BBC Sport. New Liverpool boss Roy Hodgson has admitted Torres is unhappy with the club, but that any approach depends on the Spanish star wanting to move. Liverpool have placed a reported £70m valuation on the 26-year-old, who has also been linked with Chelsea. And though Mancini has spoken of his admiration for Torres, City have not yet registered an interest in him.
