Starspangledbanner Wins July Cup, Equiano Looks Nunthorpe Bound

What a seriously good horse Starspangledbanner is. He trotted up from a wide draw in the Group 1 July Cup on Friday. Johnny Murtagh got a ban, but the horse landed a nice touch for us, allowed to go off 5/2 on Betfair.

Aidan O’Brien clearly was impressed;

“He’s very tough, he’s a serious horse. Johnny made the decision to go over to the far rail and it paid off. He’s got some courage and great pace. Very few horses have that much courage when they are so fast. It was great that the two Ascot winners were first and second, it’s great when they come together like that.”

Equiano ran another big race, to carry on his consistent season for Barry Hills. Barry Hills is now targeting the Nunthorpe Stakes, where he will try to deny Borderlescott a third successive win at York. Hills said;

“He ran a marvellous race, probably a career-best and I think he was just beaten by a slightly better horse. He certainly gets six furlongs, but I think we’ll go to York now for the Nunthorpe.”

I wonder if Starspangledbanner will now stay with Aidan O’Brien? Maybe he will come to York, I hope so as I would love to see him, he is an amazing Sprinter.
