It is getting interesting now. After a week of pretty poor racing we get a good card at Sandown then its off to Cheltenham from Tuesday for the four day Cheltenham Festival.

The festival will be absolutely fantastic. For the first time in my life I will be there for the whole four days, covering the Cheltenham Festival for SunTalk Radio, the Sun’s Radio Station.

The big card at Sandown features the Imperial Cup where any horse that wins and then goes on to win at the Cheltenham Festival picks up a £75k bonus. The Pipe Stable have been good at doing that in recent years but with no runners in the race we need to look elsewhere. Of course we are only interested who wins the Imperial Cup on Saturday.

3:05 Sandown, Qaspal- Win. It was touch and go whether Qaspal would get it the race but he did and now has a fantastic chance off such a low weight.  It was interesting what Frank Berry had to say, racing manager for JP McManus;

“Qaspal at the bottom of ours might not get in the Paddy Power Imperial Cup but he is a definite runner if he gets in. He has got a pretty big penalty, but did it nicely at Sandown. We wouldn’t mind if the ground was soft on Saturday and don’t know what he’ll be like on good ground, but he has come out of his last race well and we’re hoping that he will run well.” He could complete a three timer here for the inform stable of Philip Hobbs and at 4/1 he is worth a bet in my book.  Tony McCoy takes the ride for his retaining owner.

3:40 Sandown, Lifestyle- Win. A listed flat race sits in the mainstream of the Sandown card and will be shown live on channel 4 on Saturday. The four year old has run only once at Ffos Las, winning very well by six lengths and lines up here with a handy weight for age allowance that gives her a huge chance. Nicky Henderson of course is a past master with bumper horses and will be looking for some stable form ahead of the Cheltenham Festival. Lifestyle to win is a solid bet.

4:15 Sandown, Ticho Polos- Win. Paul Nicholls saddles Ticho Polos who was last seen getting beaten by Punchestowns at Sandown. That one now heads to the RSA Chase at Cheltenham whilst this is about the right level for Ruby Walsh’s mount. Ticho Polos should win against inferior opposition, certainly to what he faced last time!
