I can’t believe that there will be early morning inspections at Cheltenham and Doncaster, the prospect of losing either or indeed both of these cards is very worrying. The quality at both venues is really high particularly at Cheltenham.
There may be no Denman but Festivals trial day at Cheltenham looks excellent with so many betting opportunities. I will look to take on Madison Du Berlias who is 0 from 6 at the track.
Here are a few good bets for Saturday;
12:55 Cheltenham, Pistolet Noir- Win. This should kick off the day with a winner but it won’t be any sort of value. Making his debut for Paul Nicholls for powerful connection this is one horse who could strongly figure in the Triumph Hurdle market and will almost certainly be cut for that if as expected he wins this well. Ruby Walsh for Paul Nicholls, could set the theme for 2010 as in 2009 at the track.
2:35 Cheltenham, Madison Du Berlais- Lay. Yes a Lay! Clearly he is the best horse in the race, the Argento Chase, but his stats at Cheltenham are woeful. He also had a very hard race last time when [a distant] second to Kauto Star in the King George. I also have a hatred of this horse, although not his fault, when he beat Denman at Kempton Scudamore turned round and made a gesture to Ruby Walsh, Denman was clearly below par that day and was delighted to see him stuff Madison Du Berlias out of site in the Gold Cup. Previous winners Joe Lively and Knowhere are great to have on side but I really like the prospects of Inchidaly Rock. It all adds up to a lay, particularly at the track at these prices.

3:10 Cheltenham, General Miller- Win. I think this is a really good horse for the future. I love to see McCoy riding for Nicky Henderson, particularly at Cheltenham. This is his toughest test but would be surprised if he was not up to it. The price will be interesting, particularly if the Nicholls / Walsh bandwagon is powering ahead.
3:40 Cheltenham, Lie Forrit- Win (NAP). This is a great horse from a small stable. He steps up in grade but has looked top class, winning four out of five and unseating when looking the winner in the other of those runs. This is the race where we will find out if he can take the step in to the premier league, so to speak. I really think he can, he certainly travels powerfully and will be one to trade at a shorter price in running. I have always liked Fair Along who will travel well in front (and trade shorter in play) and make it a strong gallop. Tidal Bay is interesting, on his old form he would win well but he doesn’t look the horse of old. Lie Forrit could prove to be better than these. (NAP).
At Doncaster…
1:45 Doncaster, Mad Max- Win. This is a horse I really like and now he is over fences he could be very very good. He is a huge horse who jumps well. It is interesting that Barry Geraghty is at Doncaster rather than Cheltenham and I hope Mad Max played at part in that decision.He should win and any sort of price would be worth taking if you consider it value.
4:00 Doncaster, Alegralil- Win and Place. This is a horse who has not yet been tested and could be much better than her rating suggests. At Catterick last time she was devastating and I would be interested in taking a chance at a decent price for a stable very much in form.
