One nil to Chelsea, United… and the punters
PUNTERS got off to a Champions League flier with all the big teams justifying short odds – and bashing the bookies in the process – on the opening night of the group stages.
Ladbrokes report a dismal start to the European competition for bookies as Chelsea, Man United and Real Madrid all proved the most popular winners of the night. David Williams of Ladbrokes said:
“The Chelsea-Man United double was costly. Neither team hit top gear but they did enough to load the punters’ pockets. Real Madrid and Bayern rubbed salt in the wounds.”
The bookies found consolation courtesy of Apoel Nicosia who held Athletico Madrid to a 0-0 draw. At 1/6 Athletico had been the shortest priced team on the coupon all evening.
“The Cypriots did us a huge favour. They knocked out plenty of accas involving Athletico but we’re clutching at straws in truth. It was certainly a night for the punters on balance.”
Barcelona remain the narrow 4/1 favourites to defend their Euro crown.
