Fame and Glory Still the Derby Bet, Saturday 6th June

Its Fame and Glory all the way…

Ever since winning the Ballysax stakes we have advised readers to back Fame and Glory for the Epsom Derby. The Montjeu colt is favourite and is likely to face stiff opposition, from his own stable at Epsom on Saturday.

Aidan O'Brien chasing Derby Fame and Glory

On Tuesday, Aidan O’Brien has no fewer than six horses, from 13 entered in the Derby. In the week in which racing lost a legend it would be a fitting tribute to Vincent O’Brien for a horse from his Ballydoyle stables to win the race he won 6 times.

The first question to ask is why is Aidan O’Brien running so many horses? Well the first and only answer is because they all have a good chance. When you look at his runners they deserve a place in the world’s best middle distance race.

  • Rip Van Winkle- stayed on well in the 2000 guineas suggesting the step up in trip will suit
  • Blackbear Island – won the Dante Stakes at York
  • Golden Sword- won the Chester Vase
  • Masterofthehorse- was second at Chester, closing down the winner
  • Age of Aquarius- won the Lingfield Derby trial
  • Fame and Glory- Derristown Stud Derby trial winner

Six horses all with chances, why should he not run them all. He could probably run another six too!

Of the rest of the field the obvious dangers to Ballydoyle domination are also Irish trained horses. Jim Bolger won the race with New approach in 2008 and has a colt that he says has a huge chance on Saturday. Gan Amhras is well bred and should get the trip.

The trip is the question mark beside the 2000 Guineas winner Sea the Stars. John Oxx thinks he will stay the 1m 4f at Epsom but history would suggest that only exceptional horses can win both colts classics. It may prove to be the case that the 2000 Guineas winner is exceptional, but I am sticking with Fame and Glory. Half brother of Galileo he could be a special horse. John Oxx told Clare Balding in an interview for the BBC that they are not sure about the stamina. Will he stay? Certainly his brother did, but he had a different sire. Here is Galileo’s Derby win from Youtube…

Fame and Glory is a 3/1 shot and I think that he may be a bit better on the day. I hope you have bigger Ante-Post prices, as advised, but if not wait until Saturday and take a Best Odds Guaranteed price with Canbet.

I am also advising a big priced each-way bet on Age of Aquarius. I am sure there will be a few papers put this one up on Saturday. I have a theory that hacks sometimes put a horse up simply for the headline and the dawning of a new age and all that will see some fall into the trap I am sure. But he is over-priced in my view. At Lingfield he kept going and galloped to victory and could be hard to pass at Epsom. A place would be a nice pay day at 25/1.
