Vincent O’Brien – The Best Racehorse Trainer Ever..
Vincent O’Brien has passed away aged 92. He is a Legend of The Turf…
It is unlikely any trainer will ever match the achievements of Vincent O’Brien. He has won just about everything; which included 3 consecutive Aintree Grand Nationals with 3 different horses , 4 Cheltenham Gold Cups, and 3 Champion Hurdles. His 23 Cheltenham Festival winners include 10 victories in what is now called the Supreme Novices Hurdle.
That was just over jumps, on the flat; he won the Irish Derby in 1953 with Chamier, the horse that really set him on his way was Ballymoss. Runner-up to Crepello in the ’57 Derby he went on to win the Irish Derby and St Leger. As a 4-year-old he won the King George and the the prix de l’Arc de Triomphe.
Altogether he won the Epsom Derby six times and Four of them were ridden by Lester Piggott, together they were unbeatable. There will surely be a minute’s silence at Epsom on Saturday for the great man. He set up Coolmoore and Ballydoyle with son in-law John Magnier.
The significance of the man is illustrated that when the Racing Post held a poll to decide the best jumps trainer of all time Vincent O’Brien won it hands down and when they held a similar poll to decide the best Flat trainer he won that too. He also topped the paper’s poll for the greatest figure in the history of horse racing.
This is the day that racing lost the greatest trainer ever and the legend will never be forgotten.
How fitting that the best trainer today has the same name! Aidan O’Brian made a heart felt statement and says that he is humbled to follow in his footsteps. A very sad day for all the family and we pass on our sincere thoughts to you.
Dr Vincent O’Brien – Rest In Peace.
Let us remember just one big win for the O’Brien / Piggot partnership…
On Tuesday The Racing Post are Paying Tribute to The Great Man…
