Bank Holiday Bankers..Flat, Jumps and Sticky Toffee Pudding…
There are 47 races at 7 meetings in the UK and Ireland today with plenty, too many, betting opportunities. The 6 UK meetings are all on the flat except the excellent card at Cartmel, which I can thoroughly recommend as a great day out. I can also recommend the sticky toffee pudding that they claim was invented there, you must visit the Sticky Toffee Pudding shop if you go to Cartmel.
Over Jumps…
Summer jumping can throw up strange results on the hard surfaces you usually find but today there is some juice in the going at Carmel which is spot on and it should be a good day for punters. Venitia Williams has had a brilliant year and is definitely on the way to the very top. Today she introduces a really nice type in American Art (3.00) for a big owner over hurdles who is rated 88 on the flat. Oliver Greenall who, as an amateur, takes off 5 pounds and is very good value for that allowance takes the ride today. The highest rated horse in this race has a mark of only 114, from which American Art gets a total of 19 pounds and you would be pretty disappointed if American Art cannot win today on his hurdles debut.
On The Flat…
On the flat my bet of the day is Perfect Silence (3.15) who makes her seasonal reappearance at Leicester. The 4 year-old has won both her starts in handicap company and should be fresh after a 7 month break. She last raced at Windsor, off a mark of 68 when Eddie Ahern was aboard and the pair should complete her hat-trick today from a 4 pounds higher mark. Both wins came from Clive Cox switching her to sprinting and this progressive daughter of Dansili looks one to follow. I expected, given that there are only 8 runners, that she would be shorter than the current price, so a bit of value is to be had in the Betfair win market.
Speaking of value , there is plenty to be had with Gibb River (5.40) at Chepstow. Michael Jarvis and Philip Robinson team up with the, currently, odds on favourite Dhushan who has 1 run, and a moderate one at that, to his name in a Newbury maiden. Jarvis maidens are frequently over bet and Gibb River is selected in preference to Dhushan on the basis of experience and the ability shown last time out which earned him a mark of 83 for handicaps. Peter Chapple-Hyam’s colt has conditions to suit and should take all the beating. The odds on price looks to be more a result of the stable’s reputation than the form and Dhushan is exactly the sort of odds on shot that I like to Lay. I will be laying Michael Jarvis’ horse at these odds today, for sure.
