The final two relegation places will be decided Today when Sunderland, Hull, Newcastle and Middlesbrough fight for their Premier League Status. Andrew Atherley calculates every possible Scenario, what they mean for each team and where punters can profit.
The market says Newcastle and Boro will go down. The odds reflect the fact that Hull City and Sunderland will kick off Today (4pm) with two key advantages: they play at home, (Newcastle and Boro are away), and their fate lies in their own hands.
Relegation scenarios can be complicated, and the first step is to be aware of exactly what the various combinations of results will mean for of the each teams involved.
Sunderland: play at home v Chelsea. If they win, they will be safe, simple as that. Even if they fail to win, they are sure to survive as long as Newcastle do not win. If Sunderland fail to win, and both Hull and Newcastle win, they will go down. If they lose, and Newcastle win but Hull only manage a draw, they will be relegated but only if there is a five-goal turnaround in goal difference with Hull. [not very likely!]
Hull: are at home to Manchester United. If they win, they will be safe. simple again, a win and they stay up! If they do not win, they must make sure they match or better Newcastle’s result. But even if Hull do that, they will be relegated if they lose and Middlesbrough win, with a five-goal turnaround in goal difference in Boro’s favour. [not likely] Hull will stay up if they manage to draw (even if Newcastle win) if Sunderland lose by 5 goals at home to Chelsea.
Newcastle: are playing away at Aston Villa. Lose and they are down. If they draw and Hull lose, they will be safe unless Boro manage to win by an 11-goal margin [no chance] If Hull draw, then Newcastle must win. If Hull win, Newcastle must win and hope that Sunderland do not win against Chelsea, if so Sunderland will go down. If Hull and Sunderland both win, Newcastle go down even if they win. Newcastle must at least draw as a loss sends them down.
Middlesbrough: are playing away at West Ham. Anything other than victory will send them down. If they win, realistically they need both Hull and Newcastle to lose, and even then they will stay up only if they manage a 5 goal turnaround in their goal difference with Hull. If Hull lose and Newcastle draw, a Middlesbrough win will put them level on points with those two teams but almost certainly they will be relegated by Newcastle, whose goal difference is 10 goals superior (effectively 11 goals, as Newcastle’s goals scored is much higher). {Racing Diary comment Boro are really down, they have no chance of staying in The premier League}
That kind of complicated relegation scenario is now usual on the final day of the Premier League Football season, The issues have only ever been settled by this stage in 3 of the 16 seasons since the Premier League was established. And, more often than not, there has been final-day twists and turns with a team climbing out of the relegation zone at the very last minute in 7 of the 13 seasons when the relegation battle has gone down to the final day.
5 of those seven were playing at home on the final day, which really emphasises the stiff task facing Newcastle and Boro today.Home teams fighting for their lives on the final day have a 50% win record and only 3 defeats from 16 matches, which suggests that you can expect Sunderland and Hull to get something on Sunday. But teams playing away on the final day have won only 5 from 21 (24%), though they have drawn as many as they have lost ,8.
So those are the scenarios excellently explained- So what will happen…
